The Vassar Laurels
In 1866, Vassar College, located in New York, created the first all women’s baseball teams. The teams were named the Laurel and Abenakis. These women were wanting the sport to be taken seriously, but were ultimately not taken seriously. The team only lasted one year because of parent complaints saying the sport was “too strenuous for women.”
For my senior project, I am taking these teams from this time and making one modernized all women’s team. The team is named the Vassar Laurels (taking from the name Laurel from the 1860s). I strive to carry out the legacy of the teams from 1866, while also creating interest from new generations with the modern aspects.
